Clean Up Australia Day - Karak Cooby bushcarers
9:00 am – 9:00 am Clean Up Australia Day - Karak Cooby bushcarers Malvolio Rd, Coolbellup WA 6163, Australia, Meeting Point: Meet at the corner of Belarius Street and Malvolio Road, Coolbellup Book free tickets through https://register.cleanup.org.au/fundraisers/kimdravnierks/karak-cooby-bushcarers-cleanup
Murdoch University has been involved in the Clean Up
Australia Day initiative for the past 5 years. In 2025, we are partnering with
local Karak Cooby Bushcarers
to clean up a unique patch of local bush that has important connection to our
community.
Karak was the first area to be cleared for the Roe Highway
Stage 8 in Dec 2016. The site had been assessed as having significant
environmental values, including one of the largest and most intact stands of
Woody Pear trees (Xylomelum occidentalis) in the metropolitan area.
Community peaceful direct-action protests at the site were
some of the largest in WA’s history, attracting 1000s of people (including many
MU staff and students!) and resulting in 100s of arrests.
Election of the Labor government in 2017 resulted in an
immediate cessation of the Roe 8 project, including an immediate cessation of
clearing of native bushland. Work commenced to develop a restoration and
management plan.
Soon thereafter, MU researchers and teaching staff, Dr
Rachel Standish and Dr Joe Fontaine, took groups of students into the Karak
bushland soon after the Roe 8 clearing was halted to do flora and fauna
assessments as part of the background work for development of the management
plan.
The Karak Cooby Bushcare group was formed in 2023 to help
carry out the management plan actions to restore and protect this unique patch.
Check out this Gardening
Australia video for more information.

Vets & Wildlife Project Talk (DVM Students Only)
12:00 pm – 12:00 pm Vets & Wildlife Project Talk (DVM Students Only) Boola Katitjin, Murdoch WA, Australia Event Details: Vets and Wildlife Project Talk
Date & Time: Thursday, March 20 | 12:00 PM – 1:30 PM
Location: Boola Katitjin, Murdoch University, Lecture Room 360.4.020
Join us for an insightful talk about the Vets and Wildlife Project, a non-profit organisation based in South Africa that offers clinical and pre-clinical placements in Sri Lanka and South Africa. Their programs are designed for small student groups to ensure maximum hands-on experience and learning. All veterinarians involved in these programs are English-speaking.
If you are interested in gaining practical veterinary experience abroad for your DVM pre-clinical or clinical placements, this session is for you!
Presenters:
- Dr. Dawn Pearson and/or Dr. Loraine Scheepers will introduce the placement opportunities available and answer any questions from DVM students.
- All projects meet university insurance and placement requirements, and Vets and Wildlife has been collaborating with universities in Sydney, Brisbane, Adelaide, Townsville, and Melbourne for many years.
Opportunities Offered:
- Sri Lanka (Spay/Neuter Program): Clinical students can perform up to 30 surgeries per student in a two-week period, significantly higher than most other placement programs.
- South Africa (Wildlife Vet Experience): DVM 4-5 students will shadow and assist wildlife veterinarians with relocations, game captures, emergencies, and vaccination programs.
- Pre-Clinical Rehabilitation Project (South Africa): DVM 3 students will gain hands-on experience in wildlife rehabilitation.
- Sri Lanka (Clinical Placements): Clinical DVM 4-5 students can learn to de-sex dogs and cats, with programs allowing only two students per session, ensuring extensive surgical practice.
With over 15 years of experience globally and 11 years working with Australian universities, Vets and Wildlife ensures high-quality learning experiences for veterinary students.
Find out more at: https://vetsandwildlife.co.za/
We look forward to seeing you there!
MUWA will be recording the presentation for students who are unable to attend and will share the link afterward.
RAFFLE: For DVM students who attend the presentation and become MUWA club members for 2025, we will host a raffle where one DVM student can win an exclusive MUWA T-shirt, and three lucky students will receive a guaranteed spot in our upcoming Necropsy Workshop in May 2025.
