Volunteer for the Samaritans Crisis Line to provide invaluable support to people in crisis and gain invaluable people experience.
WHAT IS THE SAMARITANS CRISIS LINE?
The Samaritans Crisis Line has a vision to help create a society in which fewer individuals die by suicide. They are helping to realise this by offering non judgemental, emotional support to the lonely, despairing, suicidal, or those at risk of becoming so.
Since its inception in Perth the Samaritans Crisis Line has taken over 700,000 calls, helping countless individuals work through their emotional issues to help turn their lives around.
WHAT A VOLUNTEER DOES
The Samaritans Crisis Line needs Telephone Volunteers to provide this important service those in crisis on a 24/7 basis. As a telephone volunteer you will …
- Answer all crisis calls/emails using the Samaritan methodology
- Comply with Confidentiality Policy
- Comply with all other Samaritan Policy’s and Procedures
- Commit to ongoing development/training
- Support the organisation’s other activities as and when possible and appropriate – (i.e. fund raising, facilitating and supporting training, outreach activities)
Telephone volunteers are rostered on for 25 hours per month, which includes one overnight shift per month (11:30pm-7am).
WHY VOLUNTEER FOR THE SAMARITIANS CRISIS LINE?
The Samaritans Crisis Line calls/emails are 100% responded to by volunteers. They do not have paid staff for this role. Without volunteers they could not provide this crucial service to our community.
As a volunteer, you will receive 30 hours classroom training over 5-6 weeks (which costs $200). This training, and the experience of listening and engaging with people in crisis, will be of exceptional value to anyone studying psychology, counselling and social work or education—disciplines that lead to jobs that require exceptionally good listening, interpersonal and support skills. It also provides you with the chance to liaise and debrief with experienced telephone volunteers, allowing you to draw upon their knowledge, expertise and strategies.
